But risk is one thing; there is also uncertainty. Risk exists when an outcome can be described as a draw from a probability distribution with known parameters. Uncertainty is a bigger problem; with it, we do not even know the probability distribution. Risk and uncertainty can both translate into elevated levels of stock price volatility. Very high volatility has been with us for well over a year now. What causes it? How might volatility be better contained?
